Cell death in biofilms: A force for good

We are trying to understand how bacterial cells make decisions at the single cell level and also in the context of a structured population known as a biofilm.  I will present our current efforts to understand how a population of cells self-organizes into such complex structured communities. In particular, I will talk about the interplay between cell death and mechanical forces that appear to play a critical role in this intriguing process.
